This is now my second year "teaching" this novel to eighth graders. After reading another "heavy" novel about prejudice (Elie Wiesel's Night), I thought the kids would have had enough serious literature. But naturally I was wrong! Last year, by the time the rape trial was the focus, I literally had to wrench the copies from the kids' hands in order to get them to stop reading ahead. Why can't every novel be so gripping?
